Smaller parts and tighter tolerances are changing the way we must approach dimensional measurement problems. Most prints have a callout for size or other geometric control (GD&T) and possibly a second callout for surface finish. As tolerances get smaller, it’s possible that surface roughness or waviness can affect the size and geometric control becomes a real issue. This is backed up by ASME Y14.5M 2009 GD&T standard that tells us that the entire surface must be considered in determining the GD&T result.
